Chronic Pain Therapy in California (Virtual)

The Mind Body Therapy Center’s story originates in California, where Mind Body Therapy Center executive director Daniel Lyman was once a graduate student in social work at the University of Southern California.

There, in a USC classroom, Daniel met Alan Gordon - now well-known for being the author of “The Way Out” and one of the creators of Pain Reprocessing Therapy - who was at the time lecturing social work graduate students. Daniel went on to become one of the founding employees of the Pain Psychology Center in Los Angeles, where he, alongside Alan Gordon, helped formalize Pain Reprocessing Therapy into a comprehensive psychotherapeutic treatment and developed its potential to help people struggling with chronic pain and other chronic symptoms.

Spread across California are an estimated 6 million Californians experiencing chronic pain, according to the CDC’s National Health Interview Survey; 2 million of those suffer from severe chronic pain significantly limiting their ability to work and fulfill daily activities. The Mind Body Therapy Center is uniquely qualified to work with Californians experiencing chronic pain, delivering high-quality, individualized chronic pain therapy in a virtual telehealth setting. This allows Mind Body Therapy Center to provide access to its highly trained, specialized psychotherapists to California residents, regardless of where they live, from San Francisco to Los Angeles, Sacramento to San Diego, Santa Barbara to Lake Tahoe, and everywhere in between.

Mind Body Therapy Center’s California Therapists

The Mind Body Therapy Center’s California therapists have deep expertise and training in treating chronic pain and other chronic symptoms. Daniel Lyman worked for years as a clinical supervisor to therapists at the Pain Psychology Center, where he strengthened his ability to train and develop therapists in reducing chronic pain symptoms. Mike Averill, another Mind Body Therapy Center psychotherapist licensed in California, also worked at the Pain Psychology Center and has since gone on to lead Healing Workshops through the Pain Reprocessing Therapy Center and teach Mindful Self-Compassion. Daniel Gaines offers both virtual chronic pain therapy, as well as outdoor walking and hiking sessions for chronic pain clients in Los Angeles. (Check out this feature on Daniel Gaines in The LA Times!) Ted Howard, a mind-body therapist who helped resolve his own struggle with chronic pain through working with Dr. John Sarno, is being featured as a presenter at the 2026 conference for the Association for the Treatment of Neuroplastic Symptoms (ATNS). Kate Nitze, an LCSW based in San Francisco, combines her experience working with grief and loss as a hospice social worker with extensive training in PRT and EAET, as does Jennifer Jiang, a Los Angeles-based psychotherapist who studied at Pepperdine University and worked at the Cancer Support Community Los Angeles.
